Argentina, Chile lock up qualification with room to spare

  • Argentina and Chile win through to 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup

  • Four South American nations remain in contention for remaining two spots

  • Brazil will host the 18th edition of the tournament later this year

Argentina and Chile secured two of South America’s four qualification spots at the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup on Thursday.

The pair earned passage to Brazil 2019 with a match to spare in the Hexagonal final stage of the CONMEBOL U-17 Championship in Lima, Peru.

Argentina eased to a 3-0 win over Paraguay in the first match of the day with two first-half goals helping them remain top of the standings.

Chile had a tougher time against Uruguay, before going ahead with two minutes remaining and adding insurance in injury time for a 4-2 victory.

Winless pair Peru and Ecuador played out a 1-1 draw in the final match to keep their respective hopes alive.

The host nation will need to defeat Uruguay on the final matchday to overhaul their opponents and potentially also Paraguay.

It is a return to the World Cup stage for Argentina who failed to qualify for India 2017, while Chile will be lining up their third tournament in succession.
