  • South Africa seal qualification for this year’s U-17 Women’s World Cup
  • A 6-1 aggregate win over Morocco secured their spot at Uruguay 2018
  • Bantwana’s first appearance in the competition was at Trinidad and Tobago 2010

South Africa have secured qualification to this year’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after a 6-1 aggregate victory over Morocco in the second round of African zone qualifying on Saturday.

Leading 5-1 on aggregate following a convincing first-leg performance in Johannesburg on 4 February, Bantwana ensured they would be the first African team to qualify for Uruguay 2018 with a 1-0 away win in Saturday’s second leg in Sale. Sibulele Holweni scored South Africa’s winner with a long-range volley midway through the second half at the Stade Boubker Ammar.

The result ensures South Africa’s second qualification for a U-17 Women’s World Cup, with the team having first appeared in the competition at Trinidad and Tobago 2010. They join hosts Uruguay, New Zealand from Oceania, and Asian qualifiers Japan, Korea DPR, and Korea Republic at this year’s global finals.

South Africa will be joined by two more African teams at Uruguay 2018, with qualifying set to conclude on Sunday.
