Given its fierce passion for the game, it is no coincidence that Tibas is the base of domestic heavyweights Deportivo Saprissa. Located four km to the north of the centre of the capital San Jose, Tibas is also one of the country’s most economically developed cantons, as well as being among its most urbanised and industrialised areas.

The city’s name comes from the aboriginal language of Costa Rica’s Valle Central, with Tibás meaning “river with clear water”. Its proximity to San Jose and its reputation as a safe and quiet city make Tibas a much-coveted residential area.

Deportivo Saprissa, Tibas’ most iconic club, are hugely successful in domestic terms, with El Monstruo Morado emerging victorious in the national championship on a record 29 occasions to date. Among their feats on the international stage is their third-place finish at the FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2005.
