FIFA Women’s World Cup opening ceremony in fans' image
A magnificent display involving 1,500 fans from each of the 16 participating nations will bring the official tournament slogan 'THE BEAUTIFUL SIDE OF 20ELEVEN' to life on 26 June at the FIFA Women's World Cup 2011™ Opening Ceremony in Berlin. The central themes of the 11-minute show will be the beauty and elegance of the women's game.
A recurring feature of the ceremony will be the effect of mirrors, which will create the illusion of transporting the fans from the stands onto the pitch, as well as reflecting the rich and varied culture of the host nation. Mirrored floats will also represent each of the nine host cities: Augsburg, Berlin, Bochum, Dresden, Frankfurt, Leverkusen, Monchengladbach, Sinsheim and Wolfsburg.
At the heart of the performance will be an oversized globe which will transform into a giant mirror ball when U-20 world champion Inka Wesley kicks off proceedings at the Olympiastadion.
The Opening Ceremony of the first ever FIFA Women's World Cup to take place in Germany will draw on 2,000 volunteers from Berlin schools and over 500 square metres of mirrors to carry out the 5,000 or so choreographic processes. LED screens will also form a significant part of the show.
"The Opening Ceremony will portray all the fascinating aspects of women's football and give fans both in Germany and abroad the feeling of being a part of this wonderful event," said LOC President Steffi Jones.
