Three greats, three masterpieces

Last week the users of FIFA.com voted Abby Wambach’s dramatic extra-time header in USA’s quarter-final with Brazil at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Germany 2011™ the greatest goal in the history of the women’s world finals.

“When I headed the ball and it hit the back of the net, I knew,” said American striker, recalling the stunning injury-time header that sent the tie to a penalty shootout that her side would win. “That was my moment. It was as if I’d been preparing for it all my life.”

Wambach was not the only star of our 15 for 2015 competition. The scorers of equally stunning efforts against the Stars and Stripes in 2011 and 2007 respectively, Homare Sawa and Marta also have plenty to say about their goals.

“There’s no way I could repeat it if I tried,” said one. “It’s the best goal I’ve ever scored in my career,” commented the other.
