Canada’s Sonja Denoncourt became the first woman on the FIFA refereeing list in 1994 and the first woman to officiate an Olympic football match in 1996.

She refereed in three FIFA Women’s World Cups™ in 1995, 1999 and 2003, and also became the first female referee to be elected to the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame in 2005.

At the time of her retirement in July 2004, Denoncourt was the only Canadian referee to have officiated 100 international matches.
