Tie-breakers for Uruguay 2018 groups

As we head into the final matchday of the group stage at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup Uruguay 2018, there are still five quarter-final places up for grabs.

What happens if two teams finish level on points in the same group? How are the final standings determined? FIFA.com answers all of these questions and more below.

Who's in?

Canada, Ghana and New Zealand have already confirmed their places in the quarter-finals.

Who's out?

Finland, Korea Republic and Uruguay have been eliminated from qualifying for the last-eight.

Ranking of each team in each group is determined as follows:

  1. greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;

  2. goal difference in all group matches;

  3. greatest number of goals scored in all group matches

If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows:

  1. greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;

  2. goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;

  3. greatest number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;

  4. greatest number of points obtained in the fair play conduct of the teams based on yellow and red cards received in all group matches as follows:

  5. First yellow card: minus 1 point

  6. Second yellow card/indirect red card: minus 3 points

  7. Direct red card: minus 4 points

  8. Yellow card and direct red card: minus 5 points

Only one of the above deductions shall be applied to a player in a single match

If the teams concerned are still equal on the basis above, then there will be a drawing of lots by FIFA.***
