Canada booked a ticket to their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup semi-final with a 1-0 victory over Germany thanks to a late goal from captain Jordyn Huitema.

The first half felt more like a chess match than a football match. There was just one shot on target during the opening 45 minutes, from Canada midfielder Lara Kazandjian, in what was a cautious opening period.

The second half continued in a similar vein, with both teams having to be patient to find any openings in the attacking third of the pitch.

Canada's breakthrough moment finally came in the 83rd minute. Caitlin Shaw dribbled upfield before laying off a pass for Kaila Novak on the left wing. Novak squared a perfect ball to the feet of the onrushing Huitema, who finished superbly with a first-time left-footed strike from near the penalty spot.

Huitema's goal proved to be enough for coach Rhian Wilkinson's side to book a milestone trip to the semi-finals of the tournament, where they will face fellow CONCACAF side Mexico in Montevideo on 28 November.
