Pairings drawn for 1,000 day countdown tournament

The semi-final pairings of the U-16 international tournament – one of the ceremonial events to be held to mark the 1,000-day countdown to the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ on Friday, 18 September – have been announced. The first semi-final, set to kick off in Red Square at 12:15, will see Italy take on Russia, while Germany and Spain will meet in the second semi-final.

The tournament features the winning nations of the last three World Cups – Italy, Spain and Germany – as well as Russia, hosts of the forthcoming 2018 World Cup. Several world renowned footballers will attend the tournament as guests of honour, including Lothar Matthaus, Gianluca Zambrotta, Fernando Hierro, former Russia captain Alexey Smertin and Russian national team players Igor Akinfeev, Alexander Kokorin, Vladimir Gabulov and Alexander Kerzhakov.
