The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ is getting closer – 59 days to go!

In two months' time – on 14 June, to be precise – the 21st FIFA World Cup™ kicks off at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium, as the hosts take on Saudi Arabia.​

That leaves us plenty of time to enjoy a countdown. Between now and the start of the World Cup, we will take a closer look at a different statistic from the history of the tournament each day.​

59 - FIFA World Cups™ are veritable spectator magnets. To date, 59 tournament matches have registered crowds of over 80,000 fans cheering on their heroes in the stadiums.

Germany FR and Argentina set the record for the highest attendance in a World Cup Final with a figure of 114,600 at the 1986 edition. Next in the list comes the 1970 title-decider, which was likewise held in the Estadio Azteca, where 107,412 fans witnessed Brazil’s 4-1 triumph over Italy. Argentina’s last three games at Mexico 1986 each attracted crowds of over 114,000 in a repeatedly sold-out Estadio Azteca.

The only time greater numbers have been recorded was at Brazil 1950 in the host nation's last four outings - all of which were played at the Maracana Stadium. The decisive last match of the tournament drew 173,850 fans, but the fixture was not strictly a final as such.
