Mexico book early passage to Russia

  • Mexico become the fifth side to reach Russia 2018

  • Friday's 1-0 home win over Panama booked their spot for next year

  • It will be El Tri's seventh consecutive World Cup appearance

Mexico have qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ with three matches to spare following their 1-0 triumph over Panama in Mexico City on Friday.

Hirving Lozano’s headed goal eight minutes after half-time proved enough to overcome a gallant Panama in a well-contested encounter.

El Tri’s win leaves them three points head of Costa Rica, and nine points clear of both USA and Honduras who share third place on points. But with USA and Honduras meeting each other on Tuesday only one can potentially accrue enough points to reach Mexico and tip out the leaders from a top-three finish.

It has been an impressive Hexagonal showing from Mexico who have won five and drawn two of their seven matches.

Russia 2018 will be Mexico’s seventh World Cup appearance in a row.
