Griezmann seals move to Barcelona

  • Antoine Griezmann signs five-year deal with Barcelona

  • Brings to an end a five-year spell with Atletico Madrid

  • World Cup winner leaves Wanda Metropolitano as fifth top-scorer of all time

2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ winner Antoine Griezmann has completed a major move from Atletico Madrid to La Liga rivals and reigning champions Barcelona.

The Catalan side announced they had gained the services of the dynamic Frenchman, who signed a five-year deal to keep him at the Camp Nou until 2024 – including an €800m release clause.

Les Bleus’ No10 starred at Russia 2018 – earning himself both the adidas Silver Boot and adidas Bronze Ball – has brought about five years at Atletico to an end, where he averaged more than a goal every other game.

His tally of 133 leaves him in the top five scorers in Rojiblanco history, helping them to a UEFA Champions League final in 2016, before earning a UEFA Europa League triumph in 2018, a period in his career that saw him firmly establish himself as one of the best in the world. His finish in the top three of The Best FIFA Men's Player 2016 underlining that fact.

The 28-year-old, who despite being born in France, has played in Spain since he was 14 having joined Real Sociedad as a young prospect, has also led his country to the UEFA EURO 2016 final, clocking up 29 goals in 72 caps since making his international debut five years ago.

He helped them to the quarter-finals at the 2014 World Cup, featuring in all five games, having just pulled on the shirt for the first time three months earlier, before shining a year ago in Russia. His proficiency from the spot was huge for the eventual champions, sinking three penalties - one of which in the final, as he played his part in six of France's 14 goals on the road to glory.
