Coman: I’ll be fit for the World Cup

  • Kingsley Coman hasn’t played since undergoing ankle surgery in February

  • The 21-year-old has revealed when he hopes to return for Bayern Munich

  • France have fierce competition for places out wide

Kingsley Coman has told France coach Didier Deschamps that he will be fit for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™. The 21-year-old winger was having a superb season for Bayern Munich until suffering an ankle injury, for which he had surgery, in February.

It had been feared Coman would be ruled out of Russia 2018, but the 15-times-capped international now hopes to return against Stuttgart in the final round of the Bundesliga on 12 May – three days before Deschamps has indicated he will name his squad for the tournament.

"I'm getting better," Coman told SportBild. "Maybe I can play against Stuttgart on the final day. I'm sure I can play in the DFB-Pokal final (19 May).

"The World Cup will be no problem for me. I'll be fit in time for it coming around."

Coman, who has won six successive league titles with Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Bayern, starred at UEFA EURO 2016 and just missed out to Renato Sanches for its Young Player of the Tournament award.

Deschamps has a wealth of options at his disposal to play out wide, with Coman, Ousmane Dembele, Nabil Fekir, Thomas Lemar, Anthony Martial and Kylian Mbappe having played there in recent matches. Laurent Blanc, who helped , recently said in an exclusive interview with FIFA.com that “there aren’t that many teams with that much potential in attack” as France.

France begin their Russia 2018 campaign against Australia on 16 June, before also facing Peru and Denmark in Group C.
