The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ is getting closer – 56 days to go!

In less than two months' time – on 14 June, to be precise – the 21st FIFA World Cup™ kicks off at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium, as the hosts take on Saudi Arabia.​

That leaves us plenty of time to enjoy a countdown. Between now and the start of the World Cup, we will take a closer look at a different statistic from the history of the tournament each day.​

56 is the number of goals that England have conceded in their FIFA World Cup™ appearances to date. Germany have scored past English goalkeepers ten times – more than any other team that has faced the Three Lions in the world finals.

Among the most memorable encounters between these two sides was the semi-final of Italy 1990, where Germany won 4-3 on penalties. As ever, the Germans converted all of their spot-kicks, with Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle missing the target for England. Andreas Brehme opened the scoring earlier that evening before Gary Lineker netted an equaliser ten minutes before the final whistle.

Germany and England also met in the Round of 16 at South Africa 2010, where Philipp Lahm and his team-mates carved through the Three Lions defence to win 4-1.
