93 days to go: Pogba comes of age

The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ is getting closer – 93 days to go!

In less than four months – on 14 June, to be precise – the 21st FIFA World Cup™ kicks off at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium, as the hosts take on Saudi Arabia. That leaves us plenty of time to enjoy a countdown.

Between now and the start of the World Cup, we will take a closer look at a different statistic from the history of the tournament each day.

93 – As in 1993, the birth year of Paul Pogba, who was voted Hyundai Best Young Player at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™. Aged just 21, the midfielder was already one of the stars of French football, having burst on to the international scene at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Turkey 2013. His sumptuous technique and composure on the ball helped Les Bleuets claim the title and earned him the adidas Golden Ball, as the tournament’s best player. With the senior team in Brazil, he showcased his talent in every fixture, but was especially decisive in opening the scoring against Nigeria in the Round of 16. In picking up the Best Young Player award, Pogba followed in the footsteps of past winners such as Thomas Muller (2010), Michael Owen (1998), Enzo Scifo (1986), Teofilo Cubillas (1970), Franz Beckenbauer (1966), and Pele (1958). The only other Frenchman to have received this accolade is defender Manuel Amoros, way back at Spain 1982.
