Hosts survive South American shootout drama

As kick-off at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ edges closer every day, we at FIFA.com thought we would whet your appetite for the action.

With some outstanding games in store across June and July, we are going to focus in on highlights from some of the most memorable encounters from four years ago.

We were treated to excitement, drama, and an avalanche of goals at Brazil 2014, so what better way to get your imagination flowing for what may be around the corner this time!

Brazil 1-1 Chile (3-2 PSO)

28 June, Estadio Mineirao, Belo Horizonte

The South American duo emerged from the group stages not altogether smoothly ahead of their meeting in the Round of 16. While the hosts had got into gear against Cameroon to qualify top of Group A, Chile had been pipped to top spot by 2010 finalists the Netherlands after a 2-0 defeat. However, having been also grouped with the reigning champions Spain, progression was the important thing.

What would transpire in the Estadio Mineirao was a rollercoaster of emotions for the fans inside the stadium and across the continent. Goals, superb saves, disallowed winners and ultimately penalties put everyone through the wringer before Brazil ultimately progressed.

Chile would head home having impressed on Brazilian soil, going on to be named continental champions a year later, while the hosts faced another all-South American clash in the next round against Colombia.
