The Opening Match of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™ is a game that Costa Rica legend Paulo Wanchope will never forget. Appearing at their third global finals, Los Ticos had the honour of getting the tournament under way against the hosts amid a party atmosphere in Munich.

Though it was to be Die Mannschaft’s day, with Jurgen Klinsmann’s side kicking off their campaign with a 4-2 win, it was nonetheless a spirited display from Wanchope’s Costa Rica. The former frontman recalls netting a brace in that encounter and explains the match’s significance in the hearts of the Costa Rican people.
