On this day in 2002, in the 40th minute of Italy's match v. Mexico, Paolo Maldini made it onto the all-time list for number of minutes played in FIFA World Cup™ matches. By the end of the 2002 competition, Maldini had played a total of 2220 minutes in 23 matches.

On this day in 1986, France's Joel Quiniou officiated the first (SCO v. URU) of 8 FIFA World Cup™ matches, the highest number of matches refereed by one official in FIFA World Cup™ history.

On 13 June 1974, Brazil played a first group match at a FIFA World Cup™ in Germany; they drew 0-0 with Yugoslavia in Frankfurt.
