On this day in 1982, the city of Elche saw one of the largest margin wins in FIFA World Cup history: Hungary v. El Salvador, 10-1. The match also included the highest number of goals scored by one team in a single match. Furthermore, Laszlo Kiss (HUN) scored the fastest ever FIFA World Cup hat-trick in the space of seven minutes.
On this day in 2002, Cesare Maldini (ITA) became the oldest coach in FIFA World Cup history at the age of 70 years and 131 days; the match that marked this record ended in defeat for his team, Paraguay, against Germany (0-1).
