On this day in 1982, the city of Elche saw one of the largest margin wins in FIFA World Cup™ history: Hungary v. El Salvador, 10-1. The match also included the highest number of goals scored by one team in a single match. Furthermore, Laszlo Kiss (HUN) scored the fastest ever FIFA World Cup™ hat-trick in the space of seven minutes.

On this day in 2002, Cesare Maldini (ITA) became the oldest coach in FIFA World Cup™ history at the age of 70 years and 131 days; the match that marked this record ended in defeat for his team, Paraguay, against Germany (0-1).
