On this day in 1954, England and Belgium played out an incredible match which included an own goal in the 94th minute scored by England's Jimmy Dickinson, leaving the final score at 4-4. This remains one of the highest scoring draws in FIFA World Cup™ history, equalled only by the match between Soviet Union and Colombia on 3 June 1962, which also ended 4-4.

On this day in 1970, Italy and Germany FR produced a thrilling semi-final in Mexico City's Atzeca stadium. The Azzurri were the eventual victors, with Rivera scoring the decisive goal in extra time (final score: 4-3). This match is, along with four others, the semi-final featuring the highest number of goals.

On this day in 1982, at just 17 years and 41 days, Norman Whiteside of Northern Ireland became the youngest player in FIFA World Cup™ history with his appearance in a group match against Yugoslavia in Zaragoza, Spain.

On this day in 1994, the opening match of USA '94 was played in Chicago (Germany v. Bolivia). Germany won 1-0 with a goal scored by current coach, Juergen Klinsmann.
