On this day in 1954, Hungary recorded an impressive 8-3 win over Germany FR in Basel, with four goals scored by Kocsis; however, Germany FR went on to defeat Hungary in the final two weeks later to become World Champions.

On this day in 1990, in their first ever FIFA World Cup™ participation, Costa Rica - managed by Milutinovic - defeated Sweden 2-1 in Genoa in their last group-stage match and advanced to the second stage. Coincidentally, Costa Rica's present coach Alexandre Guimaraes featured in that match; he came on as a substitute in the 73rd minute.
