On this day in 1954, Hungary recorded an impressive 8-3 win over Germany FR in Basel, with four goals scored by Kocsis; however, Germany FR went on to defeat Hungary in the final two weeks later to become World Champions.
On this day in 1990, in their first ever FIFA World Cup participation, Costa Rica - managed by Milutinovic - defeated Sweden 2-1 in Genoa in their last group-stage match and advanced to the second stage. Coincidentally, Costa Rica's present coach Alexandre Guimaraes featured in that match; he came on as a substitute in the 73rd minute.
