On 12 June 1998, South Africa participated in their first ever FIFA World Cup™ match, losing 3-0 to France in Marseille.

On 12 June 2002, a player wearing shirt no. 23 scored a goal for the first time in FIFA World Cup™ history: Paraguay's Nelson Cuevas netted a brace (65th and 84th minute) in the 3-1 win v. Slovenia.
