On this day in 1958, Brazil won their first ever FIFA World Cup™, defeating hosts Sweden 5-2 in their sixth participation in the competition. Brazil are the only non-UEFA team to have won the title on European soil.

On this day in 1986, Argentina claimed their second World Cup title, defeating Germany 3-2 in Mexico City with the decisive goal scored by Burruchaga.

On this day in 2002, during the match for 3rd place between Turkey and Korea Republic in Daegu, Hakan Sukur scored the fastest ever goal in FIFA World Cup™ history after just 11 seconds.
