On this day in 1950, Mexican goalkeeper Antonio Carbajal appeared in his first ever FIFA World Cup match (BRA v. MEX, 4-0); he went on to become one of only two players to participate in five FIFA World Cups, the other being Matthaeus (GER).
On this day in 1958, Brazil's Pele scored three goals in a FIFA World Cup semi-final v. France (5-2). Pele is still the youngest ever player to score a hat-trick at a FIFA World Cup (17 years, 244 days).
