On this day in 1998, Lothar Matthaeus played his last and 25th FIFA World Cup™ match for Germany in the quarter-final against Croatia (0-3). Matthaeus is still the most-capped player ever at the FIFA World Cup™; his career started on 20 June 1982, when he replaced Paul Breitner in the 61st minute of Germany FR's 4-1 win over Chile.

On this day in 1990, Germany won the penalty shoot-out in the semi-final against England.

On this day in 1954, Germany FR unexpectedly won their first FIFA World Cup™, catching up from two goals down to defeat Hungary 3-2 in Berne. The decisive goal was scored by Rahn with six minutes to go.
