A comparison of height and weight figures from the 1974 FIFA World Cup in Germany with data from the current competition shows that players nowadays are substantially taller and have added some weight.

Judging by the average height and weight, the most athletic team in the current competition are clearly Australia who measure 185cm and weigh in 81kg. At the other end of the scale, Saudi Arabia averages 177cm in height and 70kg in weight.

The impressive Australian team averages have, in comparison with 1974, increased by 6cm (3.6%) and 6kg (7.6.%).

However, all other teams that were evaluated have also added in terms of height and weight. The average increase is 5cm (3%) and 3kg (4%).

The comparison included the nine teams that qualified for both competitions, for the Dutch team, runners-up in 1974, no historical data was available.
