Countdown to the first Street Football World Championship

Afghanistan against Turkey, Brazil against a mixed team from Israel/Palestine - match-ups like these are also on offer this summer in Berlin. From July 2nd to 8th 24 teams are meeting in central Berlin for a very special tournament: the "streetfootballworld festival 06" - the first Street Football World Championship.

The organisation streetfootballworld - the world-wide network for street football - brings together social football projects from five continents. For one week, 192 male and female players will display the best street football the world has to offer. Five-a-side in a street football stadium especially constructed for the "festival 06".

It's about Football and More

Unique to the "festival 06" is that all participants come from projects that use football to build peace and combat violence, to fight drug-use, poverty or Aids. Since 2002, streetfootballworld has been constructing the world-wide street football network. Over 80 projects are already members and at the "festival 06" the 24 participating projects will present their work to a global audience for the first time.

FIFA is also on the Ball

At the end of 2005, streetfootballworld and FIFA signed a strategic alliance in the area of football and development. The aim of the agreement with the FIFA movement "Football for Hope" is to strengthen the social potential of football globally. As a first step, FIFA is supporting five projects from the streetfootballworld Network.

Football and Culture

At the "festival 06" you can experience football as a work of art: on the pitch street footballers will show genuine playing styles from all over the world. There will be music and stadium snacks from the participating nations. Photos and films from the project countries will provide an insight into the diversity of their (football) culture. The works, to be displayed on the stadium's giant screen, are an official element of the German government's Artistic and Cultural Programme to the 2006 FIFA World Cup™.

Under the Umbrella of the German Youth Football Foundation

streetfootballworld is headquartered in Berlin and is active under the umbrella of the German Youth Football Foundation, founded by Jürgen Klinsmann. The German national coach is an ambassador for the "festival 06".
