Ecuador ease through, Belgium progress
Ecuador completed a 2-0 victory over Belgium to progress from Group D in second place behind today's other winners Mali, while the European side progress as one of the best third-placed sides. Washington Corozo opened the scoring in the first half before turning provider for Yeison Guerrero to seal the points in the second period.
It was Belgium who had one of the first clear opportunities in the game, with Jorn Vancamp hitting an effort from distance, but was foiled by stand-in Ecuador captain Jose Cevallos, with Joel Quintero sitting out the game with a suspension.
Dante Rigo then went closest with a stunning free kick from around 25 yards, but his strike hit the bar.
Ecuador capitalised on Belgium's inability to convert their chances, with Corozo capitalising on an error by Belgian goalkeeper Jens Teunckens. The stopper punched a cross from Jhon Pereira into the path of Ecuador's No7 who slotted into an empty net from the edge of the penalty area.
Vancamp then drew a stunning save from Cevallos, the Ecuadorian 'keeper pulling off a point blank stop to deny the midfielder, who headed Matthias Verreth's right wing cross on target from close range.
The South Americans once more punished the Belgians' profligacy, with Guerrero latching onto Corozo's flick on from Renny Jaramillo's long ball. The No10 sped away from the chasing defenders and slotted coolly past Teunckens.
The victory pits Ecuador into a Round of 16 tie against the winners of Group E in Concecpion on Thursday, with Belgium's defeat by two goals confirming their own progress and that of host Chile's into the knockout stages.
