14 days to go: Italy and Spain’s penalty drama

It took 14 penalties to determine the winner of the semi-final clash between Spain and Italy in Fortaleza at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. Legendary goalkeepers Iker Casillas and Gianluigi Buffon had managed to keep the opposing teams at bay for 120 minutes, but neither could manage to save a single penalty, which meant the shoot-out went to sudden death.

The wait to discover the team that would face hosts Brazil in the showpiece event of the Tournament of Champions dragged on until Leonardo Bonucci succumbed to nerves and sent his strike over the bar. Jesus Navas made no mistake, however, scoring Spain’s seventh penalty from seven to send La Roja into the final.
