Final four set in Oceania

  • Quarter-finals in OFC Champions League completed

  • Nine-time champions Auckland advance

  • Overall winner to feature in 2018 FIFA Club World Cup

Holders Auckland City and fellow New Zealanders Team Wellington reached the semi-finals of the OFC Champions League in contrasting fashion on the weekend.

Three-time runners-up Team Wellington enjoyed an extraordinary record-equalling 11-0 win over Papua New Guinea’s Lae City Dwellers, with Angus Kilkolly netting four times.

Away from the New Zealand capital, Auckland City were made to work overtime before seeing off the challenge of Solomon Warriors with a goal in each half.

There was better news for Solomon Islands compatriots Marist FC who scored a tough 2-1 away win over Vanuatu’s Nalkutan.

Perhaps most notable, however, was Lautoka’s 2-1 win over a strong AS Dragon side in Tahiti with Brian Kaltack scoring a last-gasp winner.

The two New Zealand sides have been drawn together in the last-four ending any chances of a fourth successive final between the pair, while both Melanesian representatives will be playing in their maiden semi-final.

The winner of May’s final will feature at the FIFA Club World Cup later this year in the United Arab Emirates.
