The draw for matches 1 and 2 of the FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2006 (10-17 December) at the Japan Football Museum in Tokyo today has produced two mouth-watering fixtures to kick off the festivities.

Match 1: Auckland City FC v CAF representative, 10 December (19.20h) in Toyota

Match 2: AFC representative v Club America, 11 December (19.20h) in Tokyo

The winners of match 1 will meet the representatives of the South American football confederation (CONMEBOL), Sport Club Internacional (Brazil), in the semi-finals, while the winners of match 2 will measure themselves against UEFA and Europe’s representatives, FC Barcelona (Spain).

The event was attended by the chairman of the Organising Committee for the FIFA Club World Cup and FIFA Executive Committee member, Viacheslav Koloskov (Russia), the president of the Japan Football Association and member of the Organising Committee for the FIFA Club World Cup, Saburo Kawabuchi (Japan), FIFA Executive Committee member and vice-president of the Japan Football Association, Junji Ogura (Japan), together with representatives of the clubs that have already qualified and the AFC and CAF, whose clubs will complete their qualifying process in November. The actual draw was conducted by Jim Brown, FIFA Director of Competitions, with help from two well known assistants: 2004 World Figure Skating Champion and 2006 Olympic gold medallist Shizuka Arakawa and the man who coached Sao Paulo to last year’s FIFA Club World Championship, Brazilian Paulo Autuori, now of Japanese club Kashima Antlers.
