Argentina-Nigeria: Quotes

Sergio Batista, Argentina coach
Winning gold today is very important for us, along with our two FIFA U-20 World Cup wins in 2005 and 2007. Our young players did very well and we’ve retained the gold we won in Athens. This is a great day for the people of Argentina, and for the development of the game there. It was hard work, because we knew Nigeria have extremely good attacking players. We wanted to play intelligently, letting the ball do the work so we didn’t have to. It was a team success.

You really can’t compare winning the World Cup as a player with taking gold as a coach. But it’s my first honour as a coach and I’m thrilled, because we worked extremely hard for it. I’m grateful to the very large number of people who’ve placed their faith in me.

I’m certain our victory today will help the national team on the road to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. One of our goals is to prepare the young players for the senior team. We’re very pleased with the work we’re doing in youth development at the moment.

On Maradona
Diego is always there when you need him most. He’s a good friend of mine. He’s supported the coaches and the players, and that’s what we want from him. He comes here and he helps out.

Samson Siasia, Nigeria coach
We wanted to win the gold medal, but Argentina are a very good team. They’re strong in defence and they have the likes of Messi and Aguero up front. We usually come off second best when we meet Argentina at major tournaments. But obviously I’m disappointed. I think we played well, but we just weren't able to score, and the very simple object of this game is scoring goals. It’s been a fantastic and amazing tournament. My lads have played really well here in China. We’ve improved with every game, and we’ll go back to Nigeria and Africa with our heads held high.
Peter Odemwingie, Nigeria forward
Winning silver is a fantastic achievement and I’m delighted. It’s a dream come true for me. This has been my first Olympics, and playing here has been amazing. However, I do think we were our own worst enemies today.
