Inaugural FIFA Fan Award nominees revealed

The three nominees for the inaugural FIFA Fan Award have been revealed, and voting to decide the winner has now opened. The three fan moments, decided by a star-studded panel comprising Gabriel Batistuta, Zvonimir Boban, Marta and Vladimir Petkovic are outstanding celebratory gestures from three very different settings. Supporters from around the world can now make their choice to decide the winner: an award for fans, decided by fans.

ADO Den Haag supporterslent their backing to Rotterdam’s Sophia Children’s Hospital, by delivering soft toys in an unconventional manner, dropping them from the upper tier of Feyenoord’s De Kuip stadium to grateful children below. Another outstanding gesture by away supporters saw Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund supporterscome together to unite in harmony, singing the anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, made popular by the Merseyside giants, in their UEFA Europa League clash a day before the 27th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

One of the most iconic images of 2016 saw Iceland supportersjoin their players in the now-famous chant-clap combination at UEFA EURO 2016. A particularly memorable performance took place after Iceland had been eliminated by hosts France in the quarter-finals, with close to eight per cent of the tiny country’s population performing the chant at the Stade de France to show their appreciation for their heroes’ efforts.

Voting to decide the standout moment, and determine the winner of the 2016 FIFA Fan Award, is open until the day of the ceremony: Monday 9 January. The award will be presented at the ceremony in Zurich later that day alongside all other award winners, whose nominees were announced last week.
