While world leaders assemble at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Scotland, the FIFA Foundation’s partnership with UPL Ltd. illustrates football’s existing involvement in supporting sustainable development in line with the objectives of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Sports for Climate Action Framework. “In 2020, the FIFA Foundation joined forces with UPL Ltd. to address some of the challenges to sustainable development in agriculture, where the partnership uses football as a platform to raise awareness and take action around key social and environmental issues,” said FIFA Foundation CEO Youri Djorkaeff. “The programme strives to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by at least one gigaton - 10% of the international commitment - to keep global warming to below 1.5 degrees celsius by 2040. In addition, the programme will also reward smallholder farmers in developing markets for adopting sustainable agricultural practices, such as efficient water consumption.” “Via programmes such as Football for Schools, the FIFA Foundation is excited to work with the international community to secure a safe climate future for our communities and environments through sustainable development and advocacy,” added FIFA Foundation Executive Chairman Mauricio Macri. “This is the power that football brings, and a power that we want to utilise for the benefit of future generations. “We are determined to show the positive impact that sustainable development and environmental protection can have, while also educating young people and displaying how a healthy and active lifestyle can also being positive outcomes across society.”
