Sport - The Bridge using football to reunite families

Founded in Ethiopia in 2004, Sport - The Bridge is non-governmental organisation whose goal it is to reintegrate street children into their families and education through sport. The NGO’s activities are concentrated in the capital Addis Ababa, where thousands of homeless children – often from rural regions – have to fend for themselves and face the dangers of living on the street.

The stated aim of Sport - The Bridge is to reintegrate street children into their families and the school system. To achieve this, the programme’s educators mostly use sport to help the children regain their health and attain social stability. Given football’s universal accessibility and associated values, it obviously plays a key role in the work of Sport - The Bridge, which FIFA has been supporting since 2010.

Over the last 13 years, the NGO has taken around 1000 children off the streets and reunited them with their families. Since 2018, their focus has been on preventative measures so as to limit the number of children forced to live on the street with all the social and psychological problems that such a life entails.

Sport - The Bridge’s ambition for the coming years is to strengthen its ties with families, communities and schools so as to continue tackling this scourge and offer affected children the path to a better life.

Sport - The Bridge is one of a number of organisations supported bythe FIFA Foundation's Community Programme.
