Last year Japan won the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ for the first time in their history, hoisting the coveted trophy into the Frankfurt sky after beating USA in the final.

In a rematch of that night, the two sides go head-to-head once again in the final of the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament in London. With the Germany 2011 finalists renewing their rivalry in the battle for Olympic gold, this edition of’s Video of the Week looks back on their encounter in July 2011.

The fans witnessed an epic match that evening in Frankfurt, with the scores level at 2-2 after 120 minutes. It was only after the penalty shoot-out that the Nadeshiko emerged as winners. Incidentally, German referee Bibiana Steinhaus, who officiated that final, has been selected by FIFA to preside over this match as well.
