FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter has reacted with deep sorrow to the death of Leo Kirch. The German media entrepreneur passed away on Thursday 14 July 2011 at the age of 84. Kirch founded and built up one of Europe’s biggest film and television groups, which earlier included TV stations ProSieben, SAT1, N24 and DSF.

"Leo Kirch brought the emotion and drama of our game to millions of football fans in their own living rooms, making a significant contribution to football's increased popularity. On behalf of FIFA and the international family of football, may I express our deepest sympathy and condolences to you and your son," the FIFA President wrote to Kirch’s widow.
