Germany's veteran defender Lothar Matthäus now tops FIFA's Century Club after the friendly against Netherlands at the Amsterdam Arena on Wednesday. Prior to the match on 23 February, which Germany lost 1-2, Matthäus was level with Sweden's Thomas Ravelli, both totalling 143 caps.
Matthäus made his first appearance in an "A" international at the European Championship final competition in Italy in June 1980. He is the only field player ever to have taken part in five World Cups. From September 1994 until shortly before the 1998 World Cup in France, he did not feature in the national team.
