There was plenty going on in the world of women’s football in November. FIFA.com rounds up some of the month’s highlights.

Last-gasp victory in front of record crowd

Germany’s women finished their year in the best possible way, as coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s team clinched a 2-1 win over England in front of a crowd of 77,768 at London’s Wembley Stadium. Captain Alexandra Popp (9’) and Klara Buhl (90’) scored against the side that finished fourth at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019™, with Ellen White netting an equaliser for the UEFA Women’s EURO 2021 hosts in the 44th minute.

The result marked Germany’s 21st victory over the Lionesses in 26 meetings, together with one defeat and four draws. "I’m very pleased," Voss-Tecklenburg told the German Football Association (DFB) website after the final whistle. "It was an important match for the future for us, because we had to overcome some obstacles during the game, particularly our young players. We did a good job. We showed that we wanted to win right to the end of the match and saw plenty of good things from the players."

Asian trio qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2020

Korea DPR and Japan secured their places at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2020 by reaching the final of the AFC U-19 Women’s Championship. Korea Republic also booked their ticket to the tournament by beating Australia in the third-place play-off.

Two goals in the first ten minutes from Kim Kyong-yong gave Korea DPR the perfect start to their semi-final, which ended in a 3-1 victory over Korea Republic. Substitute Pak Il-gyong added the third goal in the second half, while Korea Republic skipper Kang Ji-woo netted a consolation from the penalty spot.

Korea DPR will be playing at their eighth successive U-20 Women’s World Cup. They won the AFC U-19 Women’s Championship in 2007 and triumphed at two World Cups at this level, in 2006 and 2016.

"I thought our players performed very well throughout the match and I believe that their tremendous sense of spirit and teamwork was one of the main factors behind the win," head coach Son Sung-gwon told the-afc.com. "The players will now do their absolute best to win the title."

Reigning U-20 world champions Japan followed suit by beating Australia 7-0 in the second semi-final. Ota Kanno’s spot-kick and a strike from Haruka Osawa opened the scoring for the Japanese in the space of two first-half minutes.

Good draw for Wolfsburg as Bayern face Lyon

The quarter-final draw for the UEFA Women’s Champions League was made in Nyon on 8 November. Bayern Munich face the particularly tough prospect of playing defending champions and six-time winners Olympique Lyon.

"We have the standout favourites and serial Champions League winners waiting for us in Lyon," Bayern head coach Jens Scheuer told the club website. "Although it’s by no means a lucky draw, there are no easy opponents in a UWCL quarter-final. We’re ready for the test! I hope we can rise to the challenge and deliver the best possible performance over two legs to ensure that we can stand up to this top team." The winners of this tie will face the victors of the quarter-final between Arsenal and PSG in the last four.

Meanwhile Wolfsburg will play Scottish champions Glasgow City. If Die Wölfinnen defeat their opponents in this round, their next challenge will be a semi-final against either Atletico Madrid or Barcelona.
