Uruguay earn draw with Finland in tournament finale for both teams

Hosts Uruguay came from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw with Finland in their final match at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2018 on Tuesday.

Playing in front of a partisan crowd at the Estadio Domingo Burgueno Miguel in Maldonado, both sides played out a goalless first half, despite the hosts making a bright start to the match.

It was also a contest that displayed a contrast in styles, as the technical ability of the Uruguayans was countered by Finland’s physical and direct approach to the game.

Shortly after half-time, Finland claimed the lead, as Aino Vuorinen struck past Uruguay goalkeeper Agustina Caraballo with a decisive close-range finish.

That did not deter the hosts, however, who drew level on 79 minutes through a remarkable finish from Esperanza Pizarro, with her exquisite turn and shot being a possible candidate for goal of the tournament.

Pizarro’s equaliser spurred the home crowd into seeking a late winner from their heroines, but Finland withstood any more pressure, as both sides settled for a stalemate in their final Group A match to each earn their first-ever points at a U-17 Women’s World Cup.
