Toronto edge closer to maiden final

Toronto FC have one hand on a ticket to their first-ever CONCACAF Champions League final after a 3-1 home semi-final win over competition heavyweights Club America on Tuesday.

Sebastian Giovinco got the hosts off to a strong start by winning and converting a penalty, before Andres Ibarguen equalised with a superb solo goal in the Toronto rain.

Goals either side of half-time from Jozy Altidore and Ashtone Morgan gave the Canadians a handy advantage before next week’s return in Mexico City.

The result ended a 17-match undefeated run in the competition for Club America dating back to 2015.

Montreal Impact were the last MLS club to reach a Champions League final three years ago.

The winner of the two-legged final will represent CONCACAF in the FIFA Club World Cup later this year.
