Illuminated Allianz from above

What was the world’s first stadium with a full colour-changing exterior? You’re looking at it – and at just how dazzling it is when illuminated.

The Allianz Arena’s pneumatic panels light red when Bayern Munich play there, blue when 1860 Munich play there and white when the Germany national team plays there.

The above shot was taken last Wednesday, during Bayern’s 3-1 comeback victory over Manchester United in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final.

And though that result booked Pep Guardiola’s team a semi date with Real Madrid, the Allianz hasn’t always proven a profitable platform for the German giants in the king of Europe’s club competitions.

In the Champions League final in 2012, Bayern appeared en route to victory until Chelsea’s Didider Drogba headed home an 11th-hour equaliser and, after Peter Cech had saved Arjen Robben’s spot-kick in extra-time, the Blues pulled off a come-from-behind 4-3 victory on penalties.

Bayern did rebound by winning the competition last year and, if they get past Real, will head to Lisbon for their fourth Champions League final in five seasons, against Atletico Madrid or Chelsea.
