Super Eagles suffer Albiceleste de ja vu

As kick-off at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ edges closer every day, we at FIFA.com thought we would whet your appetite for the action.

With some outstanding games in store across June and July, we are going to focus in on highlights from some of the most memorable encounters from four years ago.

We were treated to excitement, drama, and an avalanche of goals at Brazil 2014, so what better way to get your imagination flowing for what may be around the corner this time!

Nigeria 2-3 Argentina

25 June, Estadio Beira-Rio, Porto Alegre

Nigeria had been here before. Since making their debut in 1994, only one trip to the World Cup had not featured a locking of horns with their South American tormentors-in-chief, Argentina. France 1998 was the Super Eagles' only respite, with a defeat to La Albiceleste a regular feature of their tournaments otherwise.

This, unfortunately for them, was to be no different. However, they certainly gave the eventual finalists a run for their money, with only a staggering strike by Lionel Messi separating them at the final whistle in a memorable topsy-turvy game.

With them set to meet again at Russia 2018, Nigeria will be hoping that a slight redesign of this blueprint could end their four-game losing streak in Saint Petersburg.
