THE DAY REPLAYED - The sixth edition of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup has begun in style. Supported by a near-full capacity crowd at the Estadio Charrua, hosts Uruguay opened the tournament with a 5-0 defeat by Ghana.

Earlier in the day, 2014 champions Japan were held to a goalless draw by South American champions Brazil. Perennial qualifiers New Zealand won their opening match at a U-17 Women's World Cup for the first time, edging Finland 1-0 thanks to a long-range strike from Kelli Brown. Maldonado then witnessed a second goalless draw in succession as Mexico and South Africa shared the spoils.

Memorable moments Guests of honour: Several special guests were on hand to witness the first World Cup held in Uruguay since the very first FIFA World Cup™ in history back in 1930. FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura, Uruguay President Dr. Tabare Vazquez, FIFA Legend and one of the greatest players in Uruguayan football history Diego Forlan, FIFA Legend Veronica Boquete and FIFA Legend Aline were all in attendance at the Estadio Charrua in Montevideo.

Mexican mania in Maldonado: Despite the match starting in the rain, that didn't stop a group of Mexico fans from singing and cheering on their team from the very first whistle. Wearing El Tri's famous colours of green, white and red with a massive Mexico flag held in the air, even when the sun came out, they brought the high decibels throughout the match.

Tournament passes million mark: After today's opening matches, the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup has officially surpassed one million fans in total attendance. A total of 9,567 were on hand to witness the hosts' opening match against Ghana in Montevideo.

Hosts open with historic song: The opening ceremony at Uruguay 2018 featured a choir made up of 2,000 children singing the popular and historic song 'Uruguay Noma'. The choir started the song until they were joined shortly after by the rest of the fans in attendance.
