Berizzo last coached Athletic Bilbao in 2018
It will be his first time managing a national team
His competitive debut comes at the Copa America
Eduardo Berizzo has been named the new head coach of Paraguay, the Paraguayan Football Association confirmed on Monday.
The 49-year-old replaces Juan Carlos Osorio, who parted ways with La Albirroja after just five months at the helm.
Berizzo's official presentation, which will include details about his accompanying technical staff, will take place on 22 February.
His first competition will be the Copa America in Brazil, where Paraguay is set up in Group B alongside a formidable trio of Argentina, Colombia and Qatar.
Berizzo was a standout central defender during an 18-year playing career, which began in his native Argentina with Newell's Old Boys under Marcelo Bielsa.
Berizzo played top-flight football in Mexico, France and Spain before retiring in 2006. He made 13 appearances for Argentina.
His coaching career began under Bielsa in 2007 with Chile, where he served as assistant manager. From there, Berizzo took the reigns at Chilean first division side O'Higgins and oversaw unprecedented success, guiding the club to its first major league title by winning the 2013 Apertura.
Berizzo moved to become head coach of Spain's Celta de Vigo in 2014 – replacing Barcelona-bound Luis Enrique – and enjoyed three seasons there. He departed for Sevilla in 2017, then Athletic Bilbao a year later, which was his last role before being appointed to lead Paraguay.
