It's snow joke in Germany

For many, it’s the most wonderful time of the year.

However, while this festive scene in Germany is typical of those being played out in many parts of the world, this is a time of year that can also wreak havoc with fixture calendars.

In this photograph, this cheerful looking snowman – complete with orange ball and football boots – is signifying the cancellation of a match between Rot-Weiss Oberhausen and Mainz in 2004.

But although several similar weather-enforced postponements are all but certain over the coming weeks in Europe and elsewhere, there will still be plenty of football to sink our teeth into over the festive period.

And for those unable to watch their team, building snowmen seems a more than acceptable substitute for the beautiful game.
