Mexico, Spain share the spoils

Mexico finished top of Group A at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Jordan after drawing 1-1 with Spain in a top-of-the-table clash at the King Abdullah II International Stadium in Amman.

Mexico’s Daniela Espinosa opened the scoring on 56 minutes, before Eva Navarro grabbed the leveller just two minutes later. Spain and Mexico went into the encounter on equal points and were both assured of a quarter-finals place after winning their opening two games.

There was little to separate the two sides in a first half of few clear-cut chances. Spain’s Candela Andujar shot narrowly wide of Miriam Aguirre’s post on 36 minutes, while Mexico’s Montserrat Hernandez received the ball at the edge of the area but sliced her effort wide moments later.

Natalia Ramos had an opportunity to fire La Roja into the lead just before the break with a free-kick in a dangerous position but saw her set-piece sail over the bar.

The encounter exploded into life after the re-start, however, when Dayana Cazares produced a marvellous turn and cross to find Espinosa in the danger area, who headed home the opener. A goal down, Spain replied immediately through Navarro, who converted Paula Fernandez’s delivery from a tight angle just two minutes later.

On 70 minutes, Claudia Pina came agonisingly close to firing Spain into the lead but was denied by a strong stop from Aguirre, while at the other end, Hernandez's powerful strike on 77 minutes sailed narrowly over.
