The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ is getting closer – 87 days to go!

In less than three months' time – on 14 June, to be precise – the 21st FIFA World Cup™ kicks off at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium, as the hosts take on Saudi Arabia.

That leaves us plenty of time to enjoy a countdown. Between now and the start of the World Cup, we will take a closer look at a different statistic from the history of the tournament each day.

87 seconds is all that it took for the Netherlands to open the scoring against the hosts in the 1974 FIFA World Cup™ title decider at the Olympiastadion in Munich. This remains the fastest goal ever scored in the Final of the global extravaganza. After a spell of Dutch possession straight from kick-off, Johan Cruyff drove into the penalty box and was felled by Uli Hoeness. English referee Jack Taylor pointed to the spot and up stepped Johan Neeskens to convert, smashing home to the left of goalkeeper Sepp Maier, who was sent the wrong way. However, the Oranje failed to press home their early advantage and eventually succumbed to goals from Paul Breitner and Gerd Muller, which earned West Germany their second World Cup crown.
