Japan set up Portugal semi with assured win over Uruguay

Japan defeated Uruguay 3-2 to advance to their first FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup semi-final since 2005.

Japan were ahead 2-0 at the first interval thanks to goals from Takaaki Oba, who finished well into the bottom corner after effective hold-up play from Shusei Yamauchi, and Masanori Okuyama.

Teruki Tabata added to Japan’s lead when he finished off a well-worked team move and headed in from close range. Uruguay captain Gaston Laduche brought his team back to within two goals by converting a close-range set-piece and Marcelo Capuso scored late on, however it wasn’t enough in the end, and Japan held on to advance to their first semi-final in 14 years.
