Italy, Portugal heading to U-20 World Cup

  • Italy and Portugal the first teams to qualify for 2019 U-20 World Cup

  • European duo join hosts Poland

  • Norway set for a play-off with two more sides booking their spots on Monday

Italy and Portugal secured their places at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Poland 2019, having secured the top two spots in Group A of the UEFA European U-19 Championship in Finland.

The pair become the first sides to qualify for the tournament, joining the hosts in the 24-team competition, after 1-1 draw with Norway proved enough for Italy, while Portugal saw off home side Finland 3-0. Norway, who finished third, will face a play-off with the third-placed side in Group B as they aim to reach their first U-20 global finals for 26 years.

Gli Azzurrini finished third at Korea Republic 2017, beating Uruguay on penalties in Suwon, having seen the South Americans eliminate Portugal by the same means in the quarter-finals.

On Monday, current holders England face a stern test against France as they look to defend their title next year. Currently locked on four points with Ukraine at the top of the table, the pair edge Les Bleuets by a single point going into Group B's final games.

Turkey, meanwhile, are out of the running, having already lost to France, and therefore will finish below them on head-to-head results.
